Shasha Tax & Retirement – March 2026 Market Update: Oil Surge & Stock Pullback

2026 / March

Shasha Tax & Retirement - Monthly Market Update

March 2026

Geopolitical:

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after strikes on Iranian targets, disrupting key oil shipping routes and pushing oil prices above $100 per barrel by the end of March. The surge boosted energy investments but added fresh cost pressures for businesses and consumers alike, including higher gasoline prices.

Stock Market Performance:

U.S. equities came under downward pressure as geopolitical risks and rising yields weighed on sentiment. Major indexes finished the month lower, with tech-heavy sectors hit hardest amid increased volatility. The S&P 500 closed at 6,528.52 on March 31 (down from 6,878.88 on February 27), posting a -5.09% monthly return. The NASDAQ Composite fell to 21,590.63 (from 22,668.21), a -4.75% decline, while the Dow Jones dropped to 46,341.51 (from 48,977.92), down -5.38%. Energy stocks provided a relative bright spot thanks to the oil rally.

Federal Reserve and Economic Data:

The Federal Reserve held the federal funds rate steady in the 3.50%–3.75% range at its mid-March meeting, citing ongoing inflation concerns. GDP projections for the year remained around 2.4% and the March jobs report delivered positive news, adding 178,000 new jobs - beating expectations.

Looking Ahead

March brought heightened volatility from geopolitical developments and rising yields, yet the underlying strength in the labor market offers a solid foundation. We expect these pressures to moderate once Middle East tensions ease and clearer inflation signals emerge, potentially opening the door for steadier economic growth and improved market conditions later in the year.
