Monthly Market Update

June 2026
Helping You Understand the Markets & What They Mean for Your Financial Future

Market in One Minute

June reminded investors that markets are constantly balancing multiple forces at once. A leadership transition at the Federal Reserve, ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and persistent inflation all competed for investors' focus. While technology stocks took a breather after a strong run, value-oriented sectors and small-cap companies posted solid gains. Although headlines drove short-term volatility, the broader economy continued to demonstrate resilience, reinforcing the importance of maintaining a disciplined, long-term investment strategy.

What Happened This Month

🌍 Geopolitical

Geopolitical tensions once again played an important role in market sentiment during June. Concerns surrounding Iran and the potential for disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz pushed energy prices higher early in the month reminding investors that global events can quickly influence financial markets. As tensions with Iran eased mid month, oil prices dropped from ~$90 to ~$68 / barrel, and investors became more comfortable focusing on corporate earnings and economic fundamentals rather than worst-case scenarios.

Markets have repeatedly shown that geopolitical events often create short-term volatility, but long-term investment returns tend to be driven by economic growth, corporate profits, and disciplined financial planning rather than headlines alone.

πŸ“ˆ Stock Market Performance

June produced mixed results across the major market indexes. The S&P 500 finished the month at 7,499.36, declining 1.06%, while the technology-heavy NASDAQComposite fell 2.81% after several months of exceptional gains. Meanwhile, the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 2.52% as investors broadened their focus beyond large technology companies, rotating into value-oriented sectors and locking in some of the strong gains generated by tech earlier this year.

The divergence between sectors serves as a reminder that diversification remains one of the most effective tools for managing risk. Leadership within the market can change quickly, making it difficult to consistently predict which sectors will outperform from month to month.

🏦 Federal Reserve, Economic Data & Interest Rates

The Federal Reserve remained at the center of investors' attention as Kevin Warsh presided over his first policy meeting as Chair. Although the Fed left interest rates unchanged, policymakers emphasized that inflation remained above their long-term target and indicated they would continue evaluating incoming economic data before considering future rate adjustments.

Although the Federal Reserve continues to emphasize inflation risks, a growing number of economists believe monetary policy is already sufficiently restrictive. Inflation has decreased significantly from its peak, while slower hiring, moderating consumer demand, and tighter financial conditions suggest that higher interest rates are continuing to cool the economy. As a result, many investors spent June debating not whether rates should eventually move lower, but when the Federal Reserve would become comfortable beginning that process.

πŸͺ™ Commodities

After posting impressive gains earlier in the year, precious metals experienced a significant pullback in June as investors rotated capital into other areas of the market. Gold declined 12.07%, while silver fell an even steeper 21.03%, as profit-taking and improving investor sentiment reduced demand for traditional safe-haven assets. Copper also moved lower during the month, reflecting continued uncertainty surrounding global manufacturing demand and economic growth. Although geopolitical tensions remained elevated, they were not enough to offset the broader shift in investor positioning that pressured commodity prices throughout June.

πŸ’‘ The Shasha Perspective

One of the biggest challenges investors face is separating today's headlines from tomorrow's long-term goals.

Every month brings a new reason to either worry, or become optimistic. June was no exception. Between geopolitical uncertainty, a new Federal Reserve Chair, persistent inflation, and shifting market leadership, there was no shortage of stories competing for investors' attention.

At Shasha Tax & Retirement, we believe successful financial planning isn't built on trying to predict what the market will do next. It's built on creating a strategy that can adapt to changing conditions while remaining focused on your long-term objectives. Markets will experience periods of uncertainty - that’s a normal part of investing. The plans that succeed are those designed to weather both good markets and challenging ones.

That's why our conversations with clients rarely begin with, "What do you think the market will do?" Instead, we ask questions like:

  • Has anything changed in your life?
  • Are you still on track for retirement?
  • Are there tax-saving opportunities we should be considering?
  • Does your portfolio still reflect your goals and comfort with risk?

Those are the questions that often have a greater impact on long-term financial success than attempting to anticipate the market's next move.

βœ… Planning Insight of the Month

Review Before You React

Periods of market volatility often create opportunities to review your financial plan - not necessarily to change it. If recent market movements have caused your portfolio allocation to drift, or if your income needs, retirement timeline, or tax situation have changed, now may be a good time to revisit your overall strategy. Sometimes the best investment decision isn't making a dramatic change, it’s making sure your financial plan is still aligned with your long-term goals.

πŸ“… Looking Ahead

Investors will be watching several important developments in July, including the next inflation reports, second-quarter corporate earnings, updated GDP estimates, and the Federal Reserve's July policy meeting. While these reports may create short-term market volatility, they will also provide additional insight into the direction of inflation, interest rates, and economic growth during the second half of the year.
